Suggestions on how to use these resources

Use the Graduate Curriculum as the starting point. If working with a study group, assign a Section(s) to each person in the group. For example, one person might have I. Normal Aerodigestive Tract, another II. Abnormal Swallowing, etc. Each person then uses other ASHA resources listed, textbooks, journal articles, etc. to compile content review for each section.

The following is extracted from the Graduate Curriculum Guide. Most of the information should be well-known to applicants. However, some areas might warrant review and discussion. The first section, Anatomy, provides an example of how the person assigned this section might add detailed information and references for others also studying for the exam.


Example: I. Normal Aerodigestive Tract

  1. Anatomy – List any texts or articles or web sites that are particularly helpful (Italics added as example of how to use as study guide)

a) Oral- Structures of the oral cavity and role of each. Review the different muscles that make up the tongue and how each controls different movements of the tongue (e.g. protrusion, lateralization)

b) Pharyngeal –Structures of the pharynx and their role in swallowing(e.g. nasopharynx, hypopharynx, laryngopharynx. Pharyngeal constrictors. Muscles involved.

c) Laryngeal-Structure of the larynx, muscles and the movements/timing of those movement for a safe swallow (e.g. medialization of artyentoids, tipping of aretynoids, biomechanical action of these structures and impact on epiglottis)

d)     Esophageal –Difference in upper 1/3 and lower 2/3 of esophagus; role in SLP in ‘treating’

e) Respiratory –Relationship of respiration and swallowing (see XXXX text pp yy-zz; article by Regina Resp, citation)
