BCS-S Renewal

BCS-S must be renewed every 5 years, with the first renewal 5 years after BCS-S has been granted.

PLEASE CAREFULLY READ ALL OF THE RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS AT LEAST 6 MONTHS PRIOR TO SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION SO THAT YOUR APPLICATION CAN BE ACCEPTED. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU APPLY FOR RENEWAL.

Because BCS-S is a certification awarded to those speech-language pathologists who specialize in providing advanced evaluation and treatment for clients with disordered swallowing, (dysphagia); requirements for BCS-S focus on activities that occur outside of the regular expectations in the workplace.  BCS-S is awarded to those whose skills and achievements reflect advanced expertise and intermediate to advanced accomplishments, not only those tasks expected as part of one's regular employment.

The 12.5 CEUs must include a portion of in-person events (state, regional or national meetings where ASHA or CME credits are awarded).  Many online are introductory or provided by manufacturers. The purpose of advanced or intermediate continuing education includes interaction with presenters, scientists and educators to advance our knowledge and skill levels. CEUs should be included if the applicant is a presenter at the meetings, presenter/author of the online activity and if the applicant is teaching a graduate level dysphagia course. Advanced online offerings should be marked to indicate that level. As of January 2023, at least 5 CEUs of the 12.5 total CEUs required for BCS-S renewal be from live in-person events.  Hours should continue to be accrued over the course of the 5 year renewal period.  Acceptable CEUs also must be from CEU events solely and directly related to the topic of dysphagia. Please note:  Proof of attendance and completion of continuing education (12.5 CEUs over 5 years) with some CE accrued in each of the years.

Related professional activities in the areas of education/mentoring, leadership and or scholarship MUST include activities outside of the regular workplace.

The BCS-S renewal process requires:

  • if submitting the Word version of the renewal application, only typed versions are acceptable
  • submission of proof of current ASHA membership
  • a curriculum vitae including documentation of clinical experience, meeting the minimum number of clinical hours required in each track in each of the five years*
  • proof of continuing education (12.5 CE units over 5 years) with some CE accrued each of the years* (a portion of the CEUs should be from in person CE events)
  • evidence of continued related professional skills (education/mentorship, leadership and scholarship/research)

Please note: 12.5 CEUs must be acquired and distributed over the five years prior to renewal. Beginning January 2023, at least 5 CEUs of the total 12.5 CEUs required for BCS-S renewal must be from live in-person events.)
