Course Description

Attendee will view video MBS clips in both real time and slow-motion, focusing upon the components of soft palate elevation, tongue base retraction, pharyngeal contractions, and pharyngoesophageal segment. Attendee will rate each swallow using ordinal rating scales to identify the presence or absence of the identified swallowing deficit and the severity of impairment. 


This course is offered for .20 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level; Professional area).

•   Describe the anatomical and neurophysiological components of each pressure generator of swallowing.
•   Identify the role of soft palate elevation to oropharyngeal swallowing function and will identify the advantages/disadvantages of standardized and nonstandardized scoring systems in describing that role.
•   Identify the role of tongue base retraction to oropharyngeal swallowing function and will identify the advantages/disadvantages of standardized and nonstandardized scoring systems in describing that role.
•   Identify the role of pharyngeal stripping and contraction to oropharyngeal swallowing function and will identify the advantages/disadvantages of standardized and non-standardized scoring systems in describing that role.
•   Identify the role of PES and esophageal clearance to oropharyngeal swallowing function and will identify the advantages/disadvantages of standardized and non-standardized scoring systems in describing that role.
