Course Description:

 

The Meet the Masters distinguished panel identified the key components for swallowing fluoroscopy procedures (birth to senescence), with emphasis on the essential information to be passed to the next clinician. This is a recording of the 2019 Meet the Masters held during the ASHA Convention in Orlando, FL.

 

 

 

This course is offered for .20 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level; Professional area).

 

Presenters

Jo Puntil M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-S, F-ASHA

 

Jo Puntil is an ASHA CFCC board member and board-certified specialist in Swallowing.  She has extensive experience in developing Interdisciplinary dysphagia programs in critical and acute care.  She has lectured for the last 34 years providing a more medically based understanding of the complex

swallowing disordered patient. Jo has numerous honors and publications.

Memorie M. Gosa, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S

Memorie Gosa is a pediatric SLP and board-certified specialist in swallowing.  She has worked in this area specialty for more than 16 years.  As an assistant professor at The University of Alabama she maintains a clinical caseload. Dr. Gosa has published peer reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, a recent textbook and has presented nationally and internationally. She maintains a clinical practice at The University of Alabama Speech and Hearing Center and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Catherine S. Shaker, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-S 

Catherine Shaker has 42 years of experience and has practiced in large NICUs since 1985. She currently is in a Level IV NICU at Advent Health for Children in Orlando FL. She has published several manuscripts on NICU intervention and is an invited lecturer internationally and nationally for therapists, nurses & physicians.

Big Considerations for Tiny Feeders:  Navigating VFSS in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (25 minutes)


Pediatric VFSS:  Fundamentals and Future Direction (25 minutes)


Adult VFSS: What to use, Interpretation of Results, and Necessary Communication to All (20 minutes)


Fluoroscopy Procedures:  Esophagus, Stomach and Pyloris, Oh My! (25 minutes)


Question and Answers (15 minutes)

 

Learning Objectives

  • After completing this session you will be able to:
  • Describe two influences in the NICU setting and its attendant sequelae on the utilization and delivery of instrumental swallowing assessments for preterm infants.
  • Discuss two reasons to allow patients to aspirate and not change their diets.
  • Explain at least two reliable, evidence-based metrics that can be derived from pediatric and adult video fluoroscopic swallow studies.
  • Identify three pieces of information that should be communicated regarding the results of the MBS from clinician to clinician as well as clinician to ancillary staff.
